Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the questions we hear most frequently from customers about the Original 360 Production System. To help you find what you’re looking for, we’ve divided the questions into separate categories, depending on the stage of Streetview recording you are wondering about.

How can I define where to record our Streetviews?

The Remote Control can load .kml and .kmz files as overlays on the map tab. It is therefore very easy to define multiple recording areas. Simply load the files onto the tablet, then select them on the map tab.

How can I define the roads that must be recorded?

The Remote Control can display transparent MBTiles as an overlay. Load the files onto the tablet, then select them on the map tab.

How long does it take to complete the recording process?

Recording takes the same time it would take you to drive the roads without recording. Simply add an 5 extra minutes for rigging up the car and 5 more minutes for taking the camera down when you are done. Learn more about how it works here.

How many Streetviews can I record in a working day?

The majority of our clients will set the Applied Streetview System to take an image every 5 meters (approx. 200 images per kilometer). If you work for 8 hours you can record around 64,000 Streetview images per day.

How long does the camera battery last?
  • The standard battery included with the Original 360 Camera System will last approximately 2-3 hours
  • A larger battery is provided with the Car Mounting System, which will extend recording time to 6-8 hours
  • The battery included with the Backpack System will last around 7 hours

Note that, as with all batteries, the temperature of the environment can influence the battery life.

When can I start to process the images I record?

You can start to process the images as soon as you’ve finished your recording session. Using the Creator 2.0 software you can stitch your images together and turn them into 360 degree Streetviews.

Do I need special software to process the images?

Yes, but this software is included with the Original 360 Camera System. The software is called Creator 2.0 and it allows you to output Streetviews to your preferred format.

How can I view and share my Streetviews?

Streetviews can be shared on the internet or on Android devices using a software player that is included with all the Original 360 Production Systems, built within the Creator 2.0 software.

How are the Streetviews hosted?

Once you’ve created the Streetviews, you can load them into your corporate hosting platform and share them with your colleagues. We are happy to provide you with support during this process. Learn more about our additional services here.

What are the Technical Specifications of the Camera System?

See the camera page.

What is the height of the camera when attached to the Car Mounting System?

The camera itself is 41 cm tall. With the Magnetic Mount attached, this is raised to 56 cm. With the Tilting Mount, it measures 176 cm. However, the height of the Tilting Mount is adjustable.

General questions

What are the maximum temperatures the camera can operate in?

The camera has been designed with two large heatsinks and an internal fan for optimal heat dissipation.

  • The camera has been operated successfully for days in the Australian outback at well above 43°C (110°F).
  • It has also been used in Canada and Norway well below 0°C (32°F).
What about dust?

The camera has six lens protectors that shield the lenses from dust and scratches. You should check the lens protectors regularly (using either the preview page of the Remote Control or by performing physical checks). If damaged, they can be replaced quickly and easily.

Rubber seals are available for the SSD and cable compartments.

For maintenance, simply dust the camera off after use, before putting it back into its case.

What are the typical data storage requirements per kilometer in a car setup?

This depends on which of the three recording modes you use:

Distance Mode

Set to 5 meters
(Most commonly used)

  • This will record 200 Streetviews / km
  • One dataset is about 2.5 MB. That is 1 GB / km.
  • A 120 GB SSD will last for 120 km.
  • The max SSD size is 1 TB. It would last for 1.000 km when recording every 5 meters.

Interval Mode

The camera can automatically release at 7 fps, 4 fps, 2 fps, and every 1 second up to 30 seconds.

Set to 7 fps:
(The maximum the camera can do.)

  • One data-set is about 2.5 MB. That is 17.5 MB / second.
  • A 120 GB SSD will last for about 2 hours.
  • The max SSD size is 1 TB. It would last for about 16 hours.

Manual mode

Assuming 2.5 MB for a streetview, a SSD lasts for this many streetviews:

  • 120 GB:   48.000 Streetviews
  • 250 GB: 100.000 Streetviews
  • 500 GB: 200.000 Streetviews
  • 750 GB: 300.000 Streetviews
  • 1 TB:      400.000 Streetviews
What are the 3 recording modes of the Original 360 Camera?

The Original 360 Camera supports 3 recording modes:

Distance Mode

The most commonly used recording mode.
The camera can be set to automatically  release at any distance between the streetviews.
E.g. 1 m, 5 m 10 m 20 m, 50 m.

5 m is the default for recording by car.
1 m is recommended to get the most while avoiding unnecessary recordings due to red lights and traffic jams.

Interval Mode

The camera can be set to automatically release at 7 fps (7 times per second) , 4 fps, 2 fps, and every 1 second up to 30 seconds.
Recommended for situations with uncertain GPS reception.
One always can reduce the footage before processing with the Reduce feature of the Creator processing program.
E.g. convert a Interval Mode recording into a Distance Mode recording with e.g. 5 meter distance.

Manual mode

Release the camera manually by tapping a button on the WiFi Remote Control.
The Manual Release also is available in the Distance Mode. But not the Interval Mode.

POI (Points Of Interest)

When logging POIs the camera is released like in Manual Mode.
